In 1605 Carthusian monks received a manuscript containing a secret recipe for an herbal elixir containing 130 herbs and plants. To this day, only two monks know the ingredients and the distillation process, and it is the only liqueur to have a color named after it. This liqueur is Chartreuse – a French liqueur known for its bold herbal flavors. The two predominant varieties are green and yellow, with yellow being the more mild of the two.
While enjoying a glass of Chartreuse on the rocks might not suit everyone’s palate, the liqueur is indispensable in classics such as the Last Word and the Bijou. However, before jumping into a bold Chartreuse cocktail, I’d suggest easing into the Swampwater. The sweetness of fresh pineapple juice perfectly complements the herbaceousness of Green Chartreuse, resulting in a balanced cocktail that’s reminiscent of a sweeter Tiki-style cocktail.
