Tequila Tasting
It’s almost that time of the year again: when horny college students flock to Mexico for a week of tanning, titties, and tequila; a combination that usually leads to regret and self-loathing. Now maybe you’ve never woken up with your private parts covered in silver body paint from a night spent with the Devil of Acapulco, but we’ve all had a traumatizing tequila experience. And somewhere between the ages of 22 and 25, we stop returning our old bestie Jose’s calls and avoid him at all costs.
I am on a mission to change that, and show the world that tequila can be enjoyed by adults in a sophisticated setting, and not just by sombrero donned sorority girls at an “around the world” party. So I invited some of the biggest haters I know over for a tasting in my first attempt to abolish tequila’s stigma.
Tequila falls under the category of mezcal, which is a liquor made from the agave plant. Tequila is specifically made from blue agave from Mexico. This type of liquor is unique in the sense that the flavor is completely affected by where the agave is grown, not just by how it is casked or barreled. There are three types of tequila based on different aging processes; blanco, reposado, and anejo, and we sampled all three of the brand 123 Tequila.
Blanco - This tequila is never aged. This is an excellent beginner tequila because it is simple, light, and citrusy. As my friend Kara put it best “the fact that I didn’t throw up is a good thing.”
Reposado - This tequila is aged for at least four months, but no more than one year. We found this to be smoother, sweeter, and more flavorful than the blanco, and was everyone’s favorite.
Anejo - This tequila is aged for at least one year, but no more than three. It was the smoothest of the three, but had a kick at the end. I enjoyed this more than the Reposado.
All in all, I think the tasting was a success, and I proved to my amigos that tequila can in fact be delicious. So while I don’t encourage you to kiss and make up with Jose, I hope you can find it in your hearts to forgive him for all those shameful nights and debilitating hangovers, so that you may learn to love tequila again. Enchoi.
